Coasts in Mind

Have you worked on or lived by the Swale Estuary, Faversham Creek or Oare Creek at any point in your life – or know someone who has?

If so, come and share your knowledge of industry, ecology, extreme weather, tides, architecture or creek life at a free drop-in session at the Front Brents Carpark (next to the Albion) on May 28th, 30th, 31st and 1st June.

There will also be a free drop-in session at the Shipwright’s Arms on 6th June.

Your knowledge and experience could play an important part to a new project called Coasts in Mind that has the aim of creating a map of how the coastline in and around the Swale Estuary has changed. The project is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and is run by the Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) team. The Creek Trust is proud to have been chosen by MOLA to partner with them throughout this project.

The coastline from the Isle of Sheppey and Sittingbourne through Faversham and Whitstable is unique and has played a significant part in national and international history. Over the last 100 years, huge shifts in industry, economy, climate and ecology have shaped the communities that live here as well as the natural and historic environments.

This project aims to capture these changes by drawing on the knowledge of people who have experienced them. In the first stage of this project in 2025, archaeologists want to learn from your local knowledge – to hear your stories and memories of the area, see any local postcards or photos you have or any records of life and work on the Swale or Faversham and Oare Creeks.
